I would say there are certain things a designer can expect in a new position with a startup and, yes, you are correct — many of them would be red flags with larger or more established organizations. But a startup is different and it is a different opportunity. They will be “scrappier” and leaner than an established organization. So as long as you know what you are getting into, I don’t think my article should cause you any worry. I have taken a lot of positions where I was responsible for research, interface design, architecture, etc. Those were good opportunities for me to learn more about UX. Like you, I wanted those opportunities. I say go forth and conquer.
