I couldn’t agree more, MXS. Thanks so much for taking the time to put a well-thought response in this section. I’ve thought about your response for a few days before taking the time to formulate my own response. What really sticks with me is your point concerning how a designer doesn’t carry the whole product. In my experience, that is extremely rare and only heard of on large products with huge budgets. Design, indeed, is one element of a successful product. But I can’t help thinking that there is an element of design in many parts of the product we don’t typically touch as UX designers — marketing, packaging, service design, engineering, manufacturing, operations and distribution etc. All of these “divisions” have an aspect of design within them that helps make a product successful. Of course, there is timing and luck involved with many products.
